Wrongful Death Statistics

San Francisco Wrongful Death Statistics

For San Franciscans, unintentional injuries are the 5th leading cause of death. In 2016, there were approximately 286,000 premature deaths, about 4,000 more than in 2014. The rate of accidental deaths in the San Francisco Bay Area is alarming, especially when someone else is at fault.

Medical Malpractice

According to a ‘Medical Malpractice Review’ conducted by The Risk Authority, $381 billion was awarded in wrongful death cases in 2017, with the average award being $17.8 million between 2008 and 2017. The review noted that 80% of these injuries occurred in hospitals. Medical malpractice is a serous issue in California, and if you believe you or a family member is not receiving proper care, seek guidance as soon as possible to recover justice for your loved ones.

Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents are a major cause of wrongful deaths in California. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of accidental death in California. In San Francisco, for ages 15-24, motor vehicle accidents are the third leading cause of death, and for ages 23-34, they are the fifth leading cause. Many of these accidents are due to driver negligence, with distraction being a primary factor. Nearly 300 deaths occur each year in California due to semi-truck and other large commercial vehicle accidents.

Construction-Related Deaths

Construction-related deaths are also significant in California. In 2015, the leading causes of construction industry deaths were:

  • Slip and falls
  • Electrocution
  • Workers getting stuck in or between equipment
  • Collapsing objects or being struct by objects

These causes accounted for over 60% of construction-related deaths. With over 300 workplace fatalities each year, about 100 people are killed by machinery and other equipment, and another 100 involve a motor vehicles. Additionally, toxic exposure and fires account for less than 1% of California workplace deaths. Older workers are killed at higher rates than younger workers, according to federal statistics.

As you can see, San Francisco has a significant number of unnecessary deaths each year due to negligence, medical malpractice, auto accidents, and more. Wrongful deaths are a pressing issue in the Bay Area.
