Phil Johnson was born in Rockford, Illinois. He studied News-Editorial Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning both an undergraduate and master’s degree. From there, Phil embarked on a five-year odyssey around the United States, working as a roving journalist. While working as the editor of a small-town newspaper in Montana, he uncovered and exposed millions of dollars in excessive taxation, earning national recognition for his investigative journalism.
While working for a legal newspaper in the Bay Area, Phil decided to enroll in law school. At UC Law San Francisco, formerly known as UC Hastings, Phil served as a teaching assistant for his Torts professor and renowned trial attorney, Shanin Specter. He also earned his way onto the school’s competitive Mock Trial Team.
Prior to joining the Anna Dubrovsky Law Group, Phil worked for a prominent plaintiffs’ trial firm in San Francisco. During his time there, he handled his first trial as a second chair and was part of the team that earned an $18.5 million jury verdict in Alameda County Superior Court after a six-week trial. The only defense offer prior to trial was a waiver of costs. This result earned him a nomination for the Marin County Trial Lawyer of the Year.
In his free time Phil is an avid sports fan. He closely follows the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, soccer, boxing, MMA and Nikola Jokic. Phil enjoys reading about world history and politics. When he is not watching sports, you might find him hiking in the Oakland Hills.
